The initiative grew from a simple but urgent idea: that filmmakers and their organisations across Europe should stand together for democracy — visibly and publicly. It began after discussions with Austrian colleagues last year, when democratic values there came under pressure, and has since become a European call for solidarity and shared responsibility within our industry.
Our aim is to build a living network of filmmakers, guilds, academies, producers, cinemas and festivals who affirm that creative freedom and democracy belong together. The website offers a first, practical step: to sign the statement, to show the logo on your website or social media, and to help the idea spread across Europe.
This is not about creating another organisation, but about connecting and strengthening what already exists — making our shared values visible, and encouraging dialogue and action wherever freedom of expression is at risk. Over time, we hope to develop further activities such as festival events, screenings, or a European “Democracy Film Roadshow”.
Right now, we are still at the beginning and every visible gesture of support matters. It would send a powerful signal if all ARTSCENICO member associations joined publicly — not only by signing, but by showing the logo and sharing the message via theis social media channels.
